Hantavirus is Not a Human-to-Human Spreading Virus: WHO Statement

Recently, there has been confusion about hantavirus and how it spreads. However, the World Health Organization (World Health Organization) has clearly explained that hantavirus spreads in a very different way compared to common viral outbreaks. It does not spread easily between people, and understanding this is important not only for physical safety but also to prevent unnecessary fear, stress, or misinformation.

Firstly, understand what Hantavirus is?

Hantavirus is a group of viruses mainly found in rodents such as rats and mice. Humans can become infected when they come into contact with these infected animals or environments where they live. Infection usually happens when a person breathes in air contaminated with rodent urine, droppings, or saliva. It can also happen through direct contact with contaminated surfaces. In most cases, it does not spread from one person to another, but it can still cause serious illness in infected individuals.

How Hantavirus Spreads in Humans?

Hantavirus spreads mainly from animals to humans. People usually get infected when they inhale contaminated air or touch surfaces affected by rodent waste. It is strongly linked to places where rodents are present, especially in rural or poorly cleaned environments.

Key points about its spread:

  • It spreads mainly from rodents to humans

  • Infection happens through contaminated air or surfaces

  • Human-to-human spread is extremely rare

  • It is not a fast-spreading community virus

Along with physical health awareness, it is also important to understand that sudden fear or misinformation about diseases can affect mental calmness. Clear information helps reduce unnecessary anxiety and panic.

What WHO Clarifies Over A Recent Debate Of Hantavirus

The World Health Organization (World Health Organization) has clarified that hantavirus does not spread quickly between people and is mainly associated with exposure to rodents. Most cases are reported from areas where rodent activity is high. For the general public, the risk of infection remains low if proper hygiene and safety measures are followed.

What are the Key Symptoms of Hantavirus Infection

Hantavirus infection symptoms begin 1–8 weeks after exposure, starting with flu-like signs such as high fever, severe muscle aches (thighs, hips, back), fatigue, headaches, and gastrointestinal issues like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In some cases, the condition can quickly worsen and lead to serious respiratory distress such as coughing and fluid buildup in the lungs, or progress to renal failure, depending on the virus strain.

Key Symptoms of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS – Americas)

Initial Phase (1–6 days): High fever, chills, fatigue, and severe muscle aches, especially in the thighs, hips, and back.
Gastrointestinal Issues: Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Late Phase (4–10 days after early symptoms): Sudden onset of cough, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing due to fluid accumulation in the lungs.
Severe Complications: Low blood pressure and cardiac shock.

Key Symptoms of Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS – Europe/Asia)

Initial Phase: Intense headaches, fever, chills, back and abdominal pain, and flushing of the face.
Later Stages: Low blood pressure, internal bleeding, and acute kidney failure.

When to Seek Care

Symptoms usually appear 1–8 weeks after exposure to rodents or their droppings. Because the illness can progress rapidly from mild flu-like symptoms to life-threatening respiratory failure or kidney complications, immediate medical attention is necessary if symptoms appear after possible rodent exposure.

What Should Be The Prevention and Safety Measures Over Hantavirus Spread

Preventing hantavirus infection mainly depends on avoiding contact with rodents and maintaining cleanliness.

  • Keep homes and surroundings free from rats and mice

  • Avoid sweeping dry rodent droppings, use disinfectants instead

  • Wear gloves and masks while cleaning contaminated areas

  • Seal holes or gaps in homes to prevent rodent entry

  • Maintain proper hygiene in storage and food areas

Good awareness about such infections also helps people stay mentally balanced, as accurate knowledge reduces fear-based reactions.

Need To Reminder Yourself | There is No Need To Panic

Hantavirus is not a virus that spreads easily between humans. It mainly spreads through contact with infected rodents and contaminated environments. According to WHO, there is no need for panic, but people should stay aware and follow basic cleanliness and safety measures to reduce risk. Staying informed not only protects physical health but also helps maintain mental calmness during health-related news.
