New Delhi, February 24, 2026: A tragic incident was reported on Tuesday morning at Uttam Nagar East Metro Station when a 45-year-old man allegedly jumped in front of a moving metro train and died by suicide, police and eyewitness reports confirm.
According to officials, the distressing event occurred at around 9:50 a.m. when the unidentified man climbed down from the platform onto the metro tracks just as a train was approaching. The train could not stop in time, resulting in fatal injuries. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation temporarily halted services on the line while emergency responders and police secured the scene.
Preliminary police inquiries identified the deceased as Maharaj Singh (45), a house painter originally from Rajasthan’s Karoli district who had been living and working in the National Capital Region. Singh had reportedly been battling depression for several years and was receiving treatment at Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, according to police sources. He had visited the hospital just a day before the incident for psychiatric help.
Singh is survived by his wife, a daughter (18), and two sons (17 and 20). His body has been shifted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for post-mortem examination, while investigators continue to piece together details and interview witnesses.
After the incident on Tuesday, Delhi Metro authorities temporarily suspended operations on segments of the line, causing delays and commuter disruption during peak hours while responding teams recovered the body and cleared the track. Metro officials have reiterated their commitment to passenger safety and are cooperating with law enforcement in the ongoing probe.
Safety measures, including the presence of staff near platform edges and emergency response readiness, have been under review by metro authorities following repeated tragic occurrences at this station.
Experts note that depression and other mental health issues remain key underlying factors in many suicide cases. In Singh’s situation, official sources confirmed he had been diagnosed with depression and was actively receiving treatment — indicating that emotional distress and unresolved mental health challenges may have played a significant role.
Mental health professionals warn that suicide is rarely the result of a single trigger. It often reflects compounding stressors such as prolonged psychological suffering, lack of support systems, isolation, or untreated mood disorders.
Local commuters and residents expressed shock and sadness after news of the incident spread. Many voiced concerns about the psychological pressures faced by individuals and stressed the importance of community awareness and early mental health intervention.
Social media users and witnesses who were on the metro at the time described the distressing scene and highlighted the need for improved preventive measures, both at metro stations and within broader community support systems.
If you or someone you know is experiencing anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts, it is important to seek professional support at the earliest. Timely mental health care can help reduce emotional distress and prevent crisis situations.
